Hi. I'm not related to this family. There was an obituary written for your grandfather in The Press-Enterprise (Riverside, CA), Fri, 30 Aug 1996.It states: "Wilton O. Allen Jr., 88, died Tuesday ...Mr. Allen, who was born in Mountainair, N.M.,.."
The CA death index also has him b. NM:
California, Death Index, 1940-1997 about Wilton Overton Allen Name: Wilton Overton Allen Sex: Male Birth Date: 7 Apr 1908 Birthplace: New Mexico Death Date: 27 Aug 1996 Death Place: Riverside
You say that your grandfather was a Jr.That would imply that his father was also a Wilton Overton Allen.I know there was one that was living in San Diego during that time frame.I came across a divorce proceeding in the Evening Tribune (San Diego, CA), Sat, 23 Jan 1915:
"DIVORCES - Wilton O. Allen, clerk in the water department of the city, was yesterday... granted a divorce from Josephine Allen on the ground of desertion.Allen testified that his wife left him six years ago to go on the stage, she having previously had a career as an actress."
6 years ago would have been in 1909, close to the time your grandfather was born. It's a bit far-fetched, but maybe Josephine did not wish to be a mother and put son Wilton in an orphanage...
Not much to go on, but your grandfather did not leave a whole lot of clues. There may have also been more than one Wilton Overton Allen living in San Diego at the time. The second one was a Major in the military.Perhaps they were one and the same. Not sure. That one married a Florence Pray in 1919.Hope this helps.Annie
