in the 1900 US Census: John Z Allen b. Sep 1831 NC (parents b. NC‚ had 9 children - 6 living in 1900. location: Catawba, York, SC the census states he was married in 1858 and they had been married 42 years He married Elizabeth Jane (Deas) Deese (1839-1921
They are bured in Catawba Baptist Church Cemetery on Catawba Church Rd, Rock Hill, SC - that is not the same as Catawba Baptist Church on Anderson Rd. He is honored with a plaque for Confederate Veterans
Also buried there an honored as a Confederate Veteran in the same cemetery is George W. Deese (1841-1915) George W. Deese married Emma Jane Hood. they are all buried in the same cemetery. Also buried there: William Deese (1817 - 1871). I do not know the relationship, but possibly he is the father of George W. and also Elizabeth Jane Deese.
John Z. Allen was born near Beatty's Ford, Lincoln Co, NC. He was the g-grandson of John Beatty who came from Scotland in 1749 and settled on the Catawba River. John Beatty founded the 1750 Unity Presbyterian Churc. John Z Allen was grandson of Thomas Beatty ( son of John Beatty). John Z. Allen was a merchant and on one of his trips he came to Rock Hill and met his future wife Elizabeth Jane "Deas" Deese. Then decided to make Rock Hill his home.

JOHN Z. ALLEN served in Co. E, 17th SC Infantry, Confederate States of America.His wife stayed at home and worked the family farm. John Z. Allen was captured and held as POW at Ft. Steadman, NJ and held until after the surrender.
In the 1900 US Census he is living near William Wherry - also connected with the Allen Family.
It is probably certain the the Allens came from Scotland via N.Ireland and the Wherry families also. They were Presbyterian.
The area in Lincoln County, NC is called "Triangle and is on the Catawba River, however on the other side of the River settled many German families. There was a distinct separation between the two ethnic groups.
