Theresa, I replied to the email you sent me but it was bounced back as undeliverable each time I tried.Perhaps you have changed your email address?Or your server screens out Hotmail?I hope you will see this.
I am still unable to reconcile all the Allen information that various researchers have sent me or that I've found on the Internet.
My ancestor Mary Allen was born c1781 (some say 24 July 1770?) Sullivan Co., NC or Sullivan Co, TN) (the N.C./TN. line changed), and"christened 1781" say some (is the date in the Birdwell Bible?)
She m. John Birdwell, b. 24 Sept 1770 Botetourt Co, VA, (perhaps written 9/24/1770 somewhere, so I think that the birthdate shown for wife Mary by one researcher, 7/24/1770, is a misreading of that) One note:John Birdwell married c1789/90 (if the ages of his older children are correct); granted even that Mary Allen may have been a child bride, was she perhaps a second wife?
A biographical sketch of Col. Allen Birdwell, printed in a history in Texas in the 20th century, states that his mother Mary Allen Birdwell was the daughter of Malcolm Allen and Margaret Henderson.
I've made a number of inquiries but am unable to find the source of this information. The name Moses may have been handed down in the Birdwell family from the Allen family, as well as the name Hunter.
The Malcolm Allen who married Margaret Henderson is said to have married her on Jan 4 or 7, 1794 Botetourt Co, VA (another source says 1799).(IGI records) If any one of these is correct, they married too late to be the parents of Mary Allen John Birdwell.
Malcolm Allen who married Margaret Henderson was called Malcolm Allen "Jr" by a lot of Allen researchers, but he appears to be the son of Hugh Allen and Anne Hunter (another source says this Hugh Allen m. Sarah Jane Whitley).
I am inclined to think that this Malcolm Allen "Jr" (who m. Margaret Henderson) was a brother of Mary Allen Birdwell rather than father.
Hugh Allen (who m. Anne Hunter, supposedly) did have a sister Polly who would be in the right time frame perhaps, b. c1780.Their brother Moses was b. c1783.
Anne Hunter was the daughter of Daniel Hunter b. c1680 who lived in VA.She had a brother Daniel Jr., said to have married a sister of Hugh Allen (& had a son Malcolm Hunter b. 1806 TN).Perhaps they went along in the same migration as the Birdwells, to N.C. and Tennessee.
Hugh Allen was b. 4 Sept 1745, d. by April 1816 Botetourt Co, VA. (Another source says he d. 1796)He was the son of Malcolm Allen (b. c1710, d. 1792) and wife Mary (Hughes, some say; others say Cunningham, daughter of James Cunningham).
Does anyone know whatever became of Hugh Allen's daughter Mary/Polly and whether she is the Mary Allen who married John Birdwell?
It is certainly possible that Mary Allen Birdwell's father was some other Malcolm Allen, as there were others besides the one who married Margaret Henderson. But there is a John Hunter Birdwell b. c1843 in TN, and it would seem a sure bet that he was a member of our family. He moved to Texas.
There is the possibility that Mary Allen Birdwell's daughter Sarah H.Birdwell was named Sarah Hunter Birdwell.
