I am also researching the descendants of Abel & Mary (Dillingham) Allen. They had at least seven children:
Abigail (1783-1787); Philena (1785-1787); William (1787-1867); Levi (1789-after 1834); Lebbeus (1792-1872);
Alpheus (1794-1872) & Mary “Polly” (1799-1839). Abel, as you mentioned, is buried in Dillingham Hill Cemetery
in North Auburn. His wife Mary “Polly” is buried in Lowell Cemetery in Buckfield with their son Alpheus. Due to boundary changes, the land they lived on was in Bakerstown, then Poland, then Minot, then North Auburn.
My children are 13th generation descendants of Samuel & Ann (Whitmore) Allen. They are descended from Abel’s son William Allen who married Araminta Pettingill in Minot , Maine on 1 Jan 1809.[ William’s widowed grandfather, Jeremiah Dillingham, had married Araminta’s widowed mother, Elizabeth (Thompson) Pettingill, in Minot, Maine on 27 Dec 1802.] William & Araminta moved to Hermon, Maine. One of their sons, Capt. John Pettingill Allen moved to Sputh Thomaston, Maine and married Elvira G. Norton.Joseph Henry Allen, a son of John & Elvira, married Olive Waterman Ames and moved to Melrose, Massachusetts. They had a son, Claude Leroy Allen, whose first wife was Arvila Lovise Delamater. Their son, Claude Leroy Allen, Jr.,(my children’s great grandfather on their mother’s side) taught at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass. Before becoming Headmaster at Hebron Academy in Hebron, Maine from 1945 to 1972. He is buried at Hebron Academy, just a few miles from where his great-great-great grandfather, Abel Allen, is buried.
For a time it was thought that William Allen (who married Araminta Pettingill) was the son of John & Rachel (Worthley) Allen of Minot. They had a son William (1790-1838) who is buried with them in Woodman Hill Cemetery in Minot. These Allen are descended from the Allens of Gloucester, Mass. I’ve traced them back to Joseph Allen who married Rachel Griggs in 1680. Some of the other names tied in with these Allens are: Coit, Osgood & White. I think that Isaac Allen of Minot who married Abigail Bradbury, was tied in with these Allens. I’ve also found some of these Allens in Oxford & Norway, Maine.
Dan Allen, who name appears several times in these GenForum Allen postings, has been doing a great job of researching the descendants of Josiah & Mary (Reade) Allen… but I think we have to go back at least one moregeneration to Samuel & Sarah (Partridge) Allen or two more generations to Samuel & Ann (Whitmore) Allen to find the common link with mamy of the Allen Families in Maine. As I have mentioned elsewhere in these GenForum postings, Abel & Mary (Dillingham) Allen had a daughter, Mary “Polly” Allen who married Col. Isaac Allen, son of John & Cynthia (Phillips) Allen of Greene, Maine. This John Allen was a son of John & Alice (Adams) Allen who were married in Marshfield, Mass on 29 Sep 1758. According to the History of Greene, Maine… there is a family tradition that Alice was a cousin of President John Quincy Adams. President Adams was from Braintree, Mass., so it is quite likely that John was a descendant of Samuel-1 & perhaps even Samuel-2. Many of the descendants of John & Cynthia (Phillips) Allen moved from Greene, Maine to Freeman, Maine. Some of their descendants moved to Turner & Buckfield.
Many of the Allens in Turner, Maine were descendants of James & Polly (Whitman) Allen. James was a son of Isaac & Joanna (Packard) Allen. Isaac was a 1st cousin to Abel’s father, William Allen. Abel’s mother was Susanna Packard, probably a cousin to Joanna.Isaac Allen (1719-1791) was a son of Ebenezer & Rebeckah (Scate) Allen.Ebenezer was a brother to Josiah Allen who married Mary Reade. After his wife died [Joanna (Packard) Allen 1725-1787] Isaac married his cousin William’s widow [Susanna (Packard) Allen 1731-1818] After Isaac died, Susanna married Dea. Othniel Gilbert.
I’m also trying to learn more about the Allens of Hope, Maine. They are reputedly tied in with the Allens of Buckfield and they have Thomaston connections as well.
Well, this is probably more than enough info to be posted, but I wanted to get enough information in here for anyone doing a keyword search to get an idea of how some of these Allen families in Maine are connected to each other.
