I agree with G. T.s conclusion that Goodall is a purely English surname. However I disagree on the original french surname. LeGardo would have been an Italian name. The French ancestor of our Alligood etal. was Elias LeGarde. The vowell "e" is the masculine french ending of the name. It is silent, therefore, the name was pronounced Le Gard. The Italian masculine ending is "o" but is not silent in that language. One can easily understand how a reader could mistake an "e" for an "o" in an old French manuscript. However an idiomatic study of the name indicates an "e" rather than an "o".
