Dear Allison Friends: Was Dicy/Dicey (1850c, WCV, below) with Josiah Allison in 1850c,his wife, housekeeper, relative? She is never mentioned in relinquishment of dower in various deeds; Josiah's 2nd wife was Paulina Jane Talley. Seeking the surname of Dicey. Thanks so much! Jack Hockett firstname.lastname@example.org
*HH319:ALLISON, Josiah, 35; Dicey, 45; Israel, 52: (Assuming Dicey was a first wife, no trace of her surname has been found; IGI says Josiah as s/o Wm. Powell:Tom’s Richmond film version: 08 Jan 1875: "Colored":Josiah Allison, age 60, single, b. & res. WCV, parents unnamed; and Paulina Jane Tally, 38, single, b. & res. WCV, parents unnamed; by N. C. Baldwin./// Mr. Wheeler’s version from either the original license or a marriage register that predates the current copy: Josiah Allison, 60, wid, white, born & resid Washington Co., VA, farmer (parents not stated) AND Paulina Jane Tally, 38, sgl, white, d/o (blank) Tally; marr: 8 Jan. 1875.///The FHL film of Register 1 & 2 (itself a copy) says both were single.Otherwise it agreed with Wheeler’s entry.
Update:From T. Colley: I just re-checked the Bureau of Vital Statistics m/film for WCV marriage register via Library of Virginia:for this couple being white or "colored" ... they are marked colored on this film ????: 08 Jan 1875: "Colored":Josiah Allison, age 60, single, b. & res. WCV, parents unnamed; and Paulina Jane Tally, 38, single, b. & res. WCV, parents unnamed; by N. C. Baldwin///From Diana Powell: The marriage is also listed in William Wheeler’s WCV Unrecorded Marriage Licenses 1850-1902 but they are both listed as white.Josiah is listed as age 60, widowed, s/o ____ Allison; Paulina, 38, sgl, d/o ___ Tally.8 Jan. 1875 by N.C. Baldwin. Also, from Tom/Jack’s research: WCV death register: WCV, Goodson: Pauline Jane ALLISON, white female, wid., b. 1832, VA, 82y; d. 16 Mar 1914, d/o (blank) TOLLEY & Pauline Jane TOLLEY (Talley? Tully?) – POB Not Known; bur. Wyndale Cem. These seem to suggest she was a Tolley, not a Barbary marr #1 to a Tolley. Josiah is listed as a H of a H in 1840. It included: 1M (30-39); 1M (40-49); 1F (40-49).Josiah must have been the younger of the two males although he was prob. closer to 28 than 30.The older male was probably his brother Israel (b. 1798), who was living with Josiah in 1850.The female could have been Dicey but since she had a hard time with her age who knows?? Israel is not known to have mar, but then again Morrison’s Allison Family Hx says Josiah never mar either.I just looked at the 1870 entry for Josiah “Ellison”. The Jane listed below him was originally entered as Jane Tally, 30, keeping house, but the Tally was lined out.Below her was a James, age 3.His surname was indicated by a slash but since Tally was lined out I don’t know if the slash indicated James’s last name was Tally or Allison.Maybe since Josiah and Jane clearly weren’t mar yet there was some disagreement as to which last name to use for James.I don’t think Jane was a widow with a child “keeping house” for Josiah.I don’t know when Josiah died but I bet the 1880 HH you found below for Jane (with sons James, etc.) was his widow Jane – or had he was out of the pic (I don’t know when he died). If the 1880 entry is Jane (Tally) Allison it looks like they didn’t get mar until child #3 was impending.I’m still trying to find Pauline/Paulina Jane Allison in 1900 or 1910. Susannah (Hayter) Allison’s will named sons Israel, Hiram, Josiah and James so if Dicey was a sister she wasn’t mentioned. There was a daughter Elizabeth who was not mentioned either but she may not have been living./// Info of T. Colley: Re: William Allison, b. 1764, d. Dec 25, 1819.
