My name is Richard Key and I am using my friend's Email/ Internet facility for outgoing and incoming correspondence.
My maternal grandfather was George Arthur Allwood (jnr)and his patermal grandfather was George Allwood a GAMEKEEPER by trade; he was my 2xgreat-grandfather.
George's parents were Samuel & Mary Al(l)wood, the entry for George's christening on 02.05.1833, Widmerpool, Notts. records Samuel's trade to be a GAMEKEEPER.
In Oct.1860 George married Emma Cooper at Pentrich Derbys., the entry on their wedding certificate recorded their respective fathers, Samuel Allwood & Hugh Cooper as being Gamekeepers by trade. The 1861 Pop'n Census Return records George & Emma living in Stavely (Nr Chesterfield) Derbys. he was a GAMEKEEPER by trade.
According to the IGI a Samuel Allwood married a Mary T(h)ravis in Lowdham?, Notts. on 24.07.1826. The entry records his trade as a FWK. I later found this abbrieviation to mean a FRAMEWORK KNITTER.
I do not think that the Samuel Allwood who married Mary T(h)raves was ever a gamekeeper. I have been unable to trace the surname of the Mary who married my 3xg-grandfather Samuel Al(l)wood, or when and where he was married.
An entry on the IGI records the christening of a Samuel Allwood, 12.08.1798, Epperstone, Notts., son of William Allwood & Elizabeth Featherstone. It is feasible that this is my 3xg-grandfather, but by no means certain. I feel that this Samuel is probably the one who married Mary T(h)ravis and emigrated to Australia?
