I have had problems getting a message to Bernice, so thought I'd post here and others can see the information also.
Name: Hamlet Amsbary
Birth: abt 1784
Death: 2 Feb 1846 Illinois
Burial: Old Cemetery, Washington, Tazewell, Illinois
Father: William AmsbaryAmsbury (~1750->1809)
Misc. Notes
He is buried in the Old Cemetery, Washington, Tazewell County, Illinois with E.R.A. on his footstone.
His wife was undboutedly Freedom Bascom.As Mrs. Freedom Amsbury she died on 2 Feb. 1839 in Mason County, Virginia.She was age 55, born about 1784.Her mother, Mrs. Esther Bascom died 3 Feb. 1839 in Mason County, Virginia, age 85.The information on them is taken from the "Western Christian Advocate."Shortly after 1840 Hamlet and the two boys, Don Carlos and Seneca were in Illinois.Seneca named a daughter Freedom.There were undboutedly other children born to Hamlet and his wife.There had been speculation prior to locating this that Hamlet and his wife remained in New York and did not go to Mason County.However, it would appear that they did go to Mason County.According to a letter written 30 Jan. 1855 by Samuel Mason Ayers of Iroquois City, Iroquois Co., IL, Hamlet had 5 or 6 sons who were younger than Don Carlos and Seneca and by 1855 they were apparently all living in Tazewell Co., IL.
On the 1810 Federal Census, Hamlet Amsbary is shown in Cayuga co., NY on page 95.He is shown as being 16 and up with a son under 16 and a female 16 and up, so was recently married.The son under 16 would be the two year old Seneca.In 1820 Federal Census, they are in Cayuga Co., NY in Mentz Twp. on page 56.
There is a marriage in Peoria Co., IL, Book III page 50 for Alanson or Alanso A. Amsbary to Sarah A. Royce on 16 August 1861.Possible connection to Hamlet.
According to information from Bill Amsbary (descendant of Eusebius), Hamlet and his family came to Mason Co., VA about 1800 and lived with Eusebius for a while before taking a wagon for Illinois.
