THE GRANTS PASS DAILY COURIER Dec. 31, 1927 [Oregon]
"...On the 4th of August four men were killed not far from Jacksonville [Josephine County]. Two Indians of the Shasta tribe were convicted in an improvised court of the murder of two of them and were hanged at Jacksonville. There was an 8 year old Indian boy there who was living with a couple of miners, and at the instigation of Martin Angell, whose son Martin, was a resident of Grants Pass for many years, the Indian boy was also hanged."
Martin (1821-1856) was later killed by Shasta Indians. Heand his son, Martin Jr. (1852-1915) are buried at Jacksonville Cemetery. Anna probably remarried. I am not related and have no further information. I just found this story in an old newpaper of my grandmother's and thought it was terribly sad and an honest, interesting piece of history.
