Ansbro Mayo
Geatings,
Hi,
I am Seán Ansbro and I am sitting in a Cyber Cafe in Mayo and read through a lot of the Family Tree postings
The Name is not originally Irish. I know what the ANSBRO is now, what it was, where it's is, got the Tea shirt and Photographed it and a few other things including a a Mural of the Original Ansbro and the house that our common Ancestor's would have lived in. i have a copy of an old map showing the old Ansbro . However for now i would like to keep this secret to stop the facts getting polluted. There is someone with a first name that looks like a more direct route back than me and I will have to get in contact with him when I get time. Just to confirm ansbro is the correct spelling Ansboro, Ansborough etc are corruptions. 99% originate from the family that came to Mayo and were Catholic.
Before slavery Irish convicts were sent to the West Indies for sugar fields. Unfortunately there were not enough so they brought in Slaves. I thing it was possibly a union of two such unfortunates that lead to the African American branch of the family.
My father John A's father was John P his father was John also and his before I suspect.
Last night Father Paddy in Castlebar Mayo told me he had asked an old priest about my relations here in Mayo and was told that it was not a local name but the American JP Ansbro gifted one of the statues in the Church.
This was JP my grandfather that I remember speaking with a strong Irish accent. He did come back here after the Wallstreet crash and drove an American car which in the 30's - 50's here must have stuck out a bit.
So you see it does not take long for the facts to get polluted.
Though he gave Castlebar Church a statue and had some businesses in the town he did not have my Father or his 2 brothers or 2 sisters Baptised in it (or my Gran buried in it).
I think the family official Townland (Homeland) must be a nabouring on posibly Balla (pronounced Ball as in the English Mall not like the American Mall (( like the English Maul as a big fight with a Lion.))
The plural of Ansbro is not really Ansbros (little clue there). Coconut to the one who gets it correct and there for knows the origin of the name (except my brothers and sister, you can buy your own) .
My Grandfather, father, uncles and aunts in the late 1950's all moved to London so I am more likely to be closer related to another Ansbro in America than anyone here, through my Great grand father John(went to new York in the 1820's I believe). I will have to ask my mum if my Grandfather JP had any younger brother's that would have stayed in America, I can't remember.
This name has been a blessing and a burden, especially with my first name in England where i have spent the majority of my life now.
When I went to University and tried to join the Library I was asked if I was sure that was how to spell my name. To which I had to reply "If I can't spell my name, I have a fat chance of reading your books!"
At the interview for my year out as a Systems Analyst the Interviewer said "Ansbro that's a weird name?"
I said "it's very common in my family"
which he found surprising and said "Is it???"
I have to go now because I am meeting Garda Bernie Ansboro(Police here) at 2 10 miles away and I don't what another one arresting me for speeding trying not to be late.
I will pass on firm dates and names when I get time.
Regards
Seán
