As someone who is interested in the Appleford surname for genealogy reasons I thought you would like to know that I am conducting a one-name study into the surname and have registered this with the Guild of One-Name Studies. A link to the Guild for this study is given below:

My research has been going on now for about 7 years and I am in contact with many Appleford descendants around the world and throughout the UK.I have, as a consequence built a considerable database of Appleford information gleaned in the main from public records and contacts with people such as you.
Appleford is an unusual surname and quite rare and people with this surname generally have originated in London, Bristol, Hampshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire as well as Essex. They are now found across the world with large numbers in Canada, Australia and the USA. My own line is from the Wiltshire town of Ramsbury and descendants subsequently lived throughout the UK but mainly in Berkshire.
Along with a number of other Appleford descendants a DNA project has been set up to see if there is a single Appleford line or whether there are multiple lines. The project is based on using the 37-marker test on the Y chromosome to see if Appleford males have a common male ancestor.
The project requires that a male with the Appleford surname submits a DNA sample, which is then analysed, and the results tabulated and compared with other Appleford samples. Appleford males from South Africa, Australia and the United Kingdom have submitted samples and we are hoping that more Appleford males will participate. Ideally samples from at least two males from a particular family line are needed but not from individuals who are too closely related.

If you would like to discuss this project then you may contact me on my email address:

If I have already sent you a copy of this mailing through another route please accept my apologies but I need to ensure that no one with an interest in Appleford genealogy is missed. It is for that reason that I would appreciate it if you would forward this email to anyone whom you may know that may be interested.
Thanks for your interest,
