Hello, perhaps I can shed some light on the Andoe surname. But first I think it will be instructive to show how I found this message.
I descend from the Andoe family and a search for Patrick Andoe just happened to highlight a page which listed a Hilary John Andoe Arathoon as taking a bar exam in New Mexico, USA in Sept 2004.Two other searches brought up your message on the India forum and this one on the Arathoon forum.
The Andoe family is rather small in numbers.A telephone search usually brings up around 50USA households, most of which I recognize as descending from Francis C Andoe who immigrated to Georgia USA about 1817.He was from Dublin Ireland, born 1798.I find references to the Andoe family back into the early 1600's in Dublin purchase orders, books mainly. An island off the northern coast of Norway is named Ando, and a Swedish friend told me that Ando means 'duck' in Swedish.Dublin was founded by Vikings in the 800's and it is likely that the Andoes were from this Viking influence.
A Matthew Andoe died in 1787 leaving a widow Mary and 6 children in County Kildare Ireland. The widow also had an address in Dublin in 1798They had a son named John who was part of the 'Rebellion of 1798' and was hung in Naas, Co Kildare in 1798 accused of being a leader of the Rebels. His brother Thomas Andoe was sentenced to Deportation to Austrailia for being part of the Rebellion. It is through his mother's letters to the authorities that we have this much information. We know that he had a brother, Robert Andoe, serving on the British warship Agamemnon.Another Andoe named Francis Andoe was also sentenced to Deportation, this family was from Dublin. His brother John was a member of the British Dragoons and he wrote a letter on behalf of his brother.
I do not know if the Deportations were carried out.I have found record of one community in Austrailia named Andow, but no other information.
Searches for 'Andoe' has also turned up a Hilary/Hillary Andoe who was cited for bravery in an incident in Monteviedeo Harbor, Uraguay Andoe, H.G. Lieut. HMS Pylades 27.9.69 River Plate Monte Video
and also he is mentioned as a British Naval Captain of a ship which made a port call in South Africa. This was mid 1800's.If you do a few searches you will find these references.
Andoe, Sir H.G. (RHS) 40/10.A portrait is located in the Life Saving Awards Research Journal, issue 40/10, ANDOE Hilary G.CaptainInflexible (ship's name)
So I'm thinking your Hilary 'Andoe'Arathoon is conected to this man and my Irish Andoe family.
