Gael; You name a Joseph Arbaugh. Is this the same man? Vinton County, Ohio member of The Christian Church was Elder Joseph Arbaugh that preformed many early marriages in the area during the 1830s-1840s time spans.
The reason I ask is because my G-G-Grandfather was David Demetrius Martin born October 23, 1828 in Scioto Ohio. My Martin family lived in the Northern part of Jackson County Ohio on lands adjoing that of Hugh Gilliland. Both famlies travled together from the Greenbrier (W) Virginia area to Jackson County around 1812.
Our family bible records David's first wife as Mary Ann "Harbaugh" married March 18, 1852 in Tipton Indiana. David and Mary Ann named one of their sons Samuel "Nelson" Martin. Harbaugh and Arbaugh are likely variations of the same surname. David's 2nd wife was Susan A. Houdasheldt married April 09, 1870 in Tipton Indiana. Susan's parents are said to be Absalom Hardyshell or Houdeshaldt and Melinda Stroud married March 21, 1838 in Jackson County Ohio. The parents of Absalom are said to be George Houdesheldt and Susannah Zirkle married about 1802 in Greenbrier Virginia. After the death of Susan, before 1880 David Martin migrated to Jasper County Illinois. I note Arbaugh postings for Sullivan County Indiana. Sullivan is only 2 counties away from Jasper.
A Joseph and Susannah Arbaugh are mentioned in an 1850 Vinton Co Ohio Deed, as heirs of George Houdesheldt. George's wife was also named Susannah, maiden name Zirkle.
Last; I note many surnames in Ohio have varations in how they are spelled. It appears that the McCaan family in Vinton County is closely tied to the McCain and Spriggs famliy in Jackson County Ohio suggesting to me that they are perhaps the same family.
I welcome any information you migt have regarding these families. Thanks Wes Hart
