Mecklenburg County, N.C., was formed from Anson County, which is now Charlotte was first settled in the 1740's by small groups of colonists. The town site itself was not purchased until 15 years later. The price paid for the original 360 acres was only 90 pounds in "lawful money," roughly $450.Charlotte was such a hotbed of Revolutionary War activity that General Cornwallis called it a "hornet's nest."
In 1764 a James Armour had estate papers in box one of 124 file boxes in the Archives in Raleigh. Many of the estate papers are almost too fragile to handle. In consulting these records bear in mind that from 1762 to 1768 Mecklenburg Co. took in all of the white settlements lying directly west as far as they extended. (60:863)
In the colonial records at a Council held at Council Chambers in New Bern the 28 & 29 September 1750, James Armour petitioned 600 acres of land for warrant and a certain land in contest between the parties Situate in Anson County. On 1 October 1751 James petitioned for another 600 acres of warranted land in Anson.Andrew Armour on 10 April 1761, upon a petitioned, it was ordered that a patent issue to him on his fathers Warrant for 212 Acres In Arson County who is now deceased the said Andrew being his Heir at law.

Spartanburgh and Chester County are next to the county line of North Carolina.Mecklenburg County is on the county line too, less than 50 miles from were James Armour settled in 1764.James Armour (ca.1800-1884) moved from South Carolina to Chester County Tennessee, and Married Clarissa Rushing about 1827.They later moved to Mississippi, and then to Hardeman County Tennessee.James Armour of South Caroline was the son of Robert Armour of North Caroline.Ref: Armour, Quinnie 00106 DAR Records. (78:63-64)
Jackson County Tennessee was once a "river town!" This is an established historical fact.Keel-boats, flat-boats, and small steam boats came up the river from Memphis and were built at the boat yards in Jackson to carry cargo to Memphis and New Orleans. There were a number of boat-yards, such as the one owned by Armour and Lake in 1824, using flat-boats for the cheapest, the easiest, and the safest means of transportation into the former hunting grounds of the Chickasaws.Beginning about 1828 there were several houses beside that of Robert Lake erected. The Armour Hotel built in the year (1830) by William Armour was one of them.By historical accounts William Armour was supposed to be from Carlisle Pa.He was recorded as being so enthusiastic getting produce to market he wanted to borrow a million dollars from Europe for a road from East to West.(77:88,121-128,134,199,208,278,320,324;85:734,736,738)
