I have compiled the names of over 980 men who belonged to Butler's Rangers. Here is what I have on Jacob Arner.
Arner, Jacob. Private. Parents born in Germany. Born in America 1759. At the outbreak of the Revolution he was living near Wyoming, on the Susquehanna River, Pa. Forced into the rebel army, deserted. Married Barbara Arnold, a Dunkard from Redstone, Pa. In Captain Peter Ten Broeck's company 1 Aug 1778. An artificer. He was on a "List of Persons who have Subscribed their Names in Order to Settle and Cultivate the Lands Opposite Niagara" on 20 jul 1784. Drawing rations. From the grouping of the names it would appear he was still in barracks and had yet to go onto the land. In 1787 he was settled on Lot 27 on the north shore of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Detroit River. In 1789 he was described as a "sham settler" who had not made any improvement to the land. Settled in Gosfield, UC. Children: John, Jacob, Susan, Madeline, Elizabeth, may.
