ARROWOOD Land Records - Buncombe County, NC
I am researching the BANKS surname in Western North Carolina and have seen the ARROWOOD surname intermarry with my lines on several occasions. During my searches I have found a web site that is proving to be a treasure trove of data. I think it will help you if your family lived in Buncombe County.
The Buncombe County Office of the Register of Deeds has placed tens of thousands of land records on electronic file that you can access for free. These land records date from 1924 to 2004. Plat maps are also on line from 1900 to 1994.
The site also lists Marriages by name and year from 1990 to 2004. Deaths are listed by name and year from 1913 to 2004. Exact dates and details are not provided. However, the Book and Page number where these records are recorded are given so you can order a copy of the record from the Register’s Office.
This site will prove invaluable in tracking down the names of spouses. Additionally, many of the land records will list all heirs (and spouses) of a particular estate. When more than one person is mentioned in a land record – each individual will be given an entry. Check for variations – ex: William A. Banks may have an entry as well as W. A. Banks,William Banks or W. Banks. It all depended on how the record was recorded by the clerk.
Go to www.buncombecounty.org. Click on Departments and then Land Records. Scroll down to Register of Deeds. Then click on Online Database. Registration is free and once you get a User ID and Password you can access these files. Once in, click the word Simple under Name. Then type in your surname.
The ARROWOOD surname has over 750 entries. Most of these entries have multiple listings which could add hundreds more documents.
Good Hunting,
David Banks
