Spelling note: Some researchers on Horwood, Whorwood, Harrod and other variant spellings may find their name is a phonetic spelling of Harwood pronounced with a centuries-old British accent slurring some letters.
All males with the Harrawood, Harwood, Horwood, Harrod and related surnames are cordially invited to submit a Y-DNA test and join the study. It's a test where you just swab the inside of your cheek with a little plastic scraper -- no blood involved -- no medical information recorded or reported. The testkit is ordered on the internet and comes by mail from the leading genealogical testing company with the largest databank.
Females have no y for the test, but are cordially invited to participate by recruiting a father, brother, or paternal uncle, cousin or nephew, etc. with the Harrawood/Harwood surname to test, and by helping with the cost-sharing.
One important objective of our tracing program is to collect tests representing the various principal Harwood lines immigrating from the British Isles to the United States. We need to determine which of these different Harwood and related-spelling lines coming down from different immigrants arriving at different times might have been related to a common ancestor.
An equally important objective is to collect tests representing the principal Harwood lines in the British Isles. This information and the resulting exchange of information between related lines would substantially promote our goal of tracing different Harwood lines back as early as possible in the British Isles. British internet sites tracing the Harwood families in Britain could be good places to find suitable test subjects.

- to help focus our traditional Harwood research on the names, places and times most likely to be productive.
If you are in contact with Harrawood descendants coming down from a different line, consider explaining the dna testing program and its benefits and potential to them and encouraging them to participate.
Suggestion: Think of a possible connection you may have to another line that you most want to prove or disprove. For example, you may have a strong suspicion based on associations in the public records that your ancestor is descended from a Harwood family in VA, NC or MA, but perhaps you just can't find the probate records to prove it. Next, search through GenForum or RootsWeb or elsewhere, send a few emails, and find and recruit a male Harwood descendant from that line whose test results, compared with yours, would either prove or disprove that connection.
If tests show the other line is unrelated, cross it off your list. If the other line is a match for yours, then you can focus your research and search all the records on the other line, and not waste your time on unrelated lines.
Many of the most valuable test matches reportedly come from test subjects we recruit ourselves. We know the most about what we want to find out, and we have the greatest incentive to figure out how to get it done.
