I am a decendant of John ARTHUR & Philippa KENT whom were married in the Liskeard district of Cornwall in 1856 and came to South Australia. (I am decended through their daugther Grace ARTHUR whom married into the REED family. I am a REED still).
Their are many post on this familyon the internet, but care needs to be taken to decern what's right as there are some points not yet clear.
The following are some points about this family you may be interested in...
1. Philippa KENT. Most of her ancestors had been living in the area around Saint Neot, Cornwall for about 400 years! (direct ancestral surnames include; KENT,PEARCE,MUTTON, DAVEY,KEAST,LANDREY,LORD,LANE,WILCOX,OUGH,HELLMAN,WILLS,MENHENIOT,JANE,CALFE,ROBYNS,YAWLAND,GLANFIELD,TAPPRELL,SMITH (we have traced most of every branch we physically could).(see my 'MUTTON' post for MUTTON side).
2.Joseph KENT (Philippa's brother) also came to South Australia and settled in Mannum. (Interesting to note that they may have met here just before John ARTHUR & Philippa moved to the midnorth of SA, as Mannum isn't very far from there property they had at Callington (South Australia).
3. John ARTHUR's father was also called John ARTHUR (from marriage certificate), but this is where the mystery of the ARTHUR line begins. John (at the time of marriage was said to have been living in 'Ley Village' (also Philippa is from there)(Ley is next to Saint Neot). There are 2 ARTHUR families living in Ley Village around that time, (one of which came up from southern cornwall) and the other unknown origin, but fits the picture, having John ARTHUR & Mary BARNICOAT as the parents. This Looks easy at first as this had 2 sons named 'John' one of which was born about the right time (1834/5), christened 24th Mar 1835 Saint Neot Parish, however, this John dies? and is buried on the 30 Mar 1835 Saint Neot. The second 'John' born c1841 dies in 1842 (cause: scarlot fever). So were is our John? are records missing? are there record errors? was he adopted?... please, if anyone can help let me know.
now for some facts
John & Philippa about a month after their marriage in 1856 left England for Australia aboard the 'General Hewett' arrived in Portland, Victoria, AUST 9th Oct 1856, stayed there for only a couple weeks, then came to Adelaide, South Australia aboard the 'White Swan III'. John mined near Adelaide briefly, Moved to Callington were they farmed & mine, were near Tungkillo for a time, then moved to Wallaway (Orroroo area of South Australia) where they farmed and eventually died.

There are many sites and other information available about the decendants of this family. If anyone has any photoes of John ARTHUR & Philippa KENT or their children it would be good to get a copy as we only have one of daughter Grace. Any extra information would be nice to exchange too.
