Hi!
My great-grandmother was Barbara Artman! I don't know her husband's name - Josephor Anthony? This is weird - but...
He came over alone from Bavaria around that time, perhaps, was in his late teens, married Barbara Multerer (or Muelterer), who also came to Michigan on HER own from Bavaria.
It is "weird' because he ended up in is it... :)Forestville or Forrester? MI, near Port Huron, in the same vicinity as the "other" Artman family.
My grandmother (my Mother's mother) was the eldest. Her name was Carolyn. She was born March 6 1893, and died Sept 1993.
She moved to Detroit, and married my grandfather, last name West.
She was one of the last of theone-room schoolteachers, as was her youngest sister, Irene.
There were at least three sons. Joe, who stayed in that area and inherited the family farm. He married late in life, to Anna. I only visited their farm once when I was around 6-8 years old, don't know why we never went up there, as most summers we spent several weeks at a cottage on the St Clair River, just about 5 miles south of the mouth of Huron. They had no children, and the farm was sold after Anna died.I recall a herd of dairy cows.
The other sons were:Sylvester (called Kelly), and Bert (was it short for Albert?0 His wife's name was Wuanita, I believe they lived in FL.
Another daughter, Francis (Frank). Shenevermarried, and she lived on the farm and periodically with my mom's family. The story was she had been kicked in the head by one of the draft horses, and spent years in and out of mental institutions. She committed suicide - must have been in the late 1930S? My mother never said much about her except when she lived with them, during the Depression, she shared her room. My mother is an only child.
My mother was born in 1928.
Sylvester and his wife, Edna ?, also resided in Detroit, and had two sons, who I think are still alive, so don't want to put their names down - but am not sure. They both haves children who I knew from childhood.I DO know that one of them researched the Artmans back into Bavaria and actually went over there - maybe in the 1970s or 80s, and met some of his second cousins!
I haven't been back to MI since the 1980s, but am planning a trip back to Detroit in early June for my dad's sister's' b'day, and am only today getting backinto researching this family - have done all my maternal and paternal grandparents' lines, so - I hope you can help me and vice a versa!
Thank YOU SO MUCH in advance!
Cheryl
