This Joseph Asbel(l) is the one my grand-aunt has identified as the father of Aaron Asbell b. 1800 in NC.(my gr-grandfather)Her family history is very skimpy on Asbell ancestry beyond Aaron but she does state that Joseph Asbell took the oath of Allegiance to the Colonial Cause at Kingston, Lenoir Co., NC, on 3 May 1778.
She notes that Joseph was found on the 1790 Pitt Co., NC census as was a William Bonner who later conveyed land and moved to Granville Co., NC with his brother Thomas Bonner.
She also states that William Bonner later received 4 land grants in Hickman Co., KY and moved there abt 1828 with his family and was accompanied by Aaron Asbell, son of Joseph.Aaron Asbell married Elizabeth Bonner (dau. of William) in Hickman Co., KY in 1830.
I have been planning to re-trace the Asbell/Bonner movements backward from Granville Co. to Pitt Co. to see what can be found regarding vital records, land deeds, wills, etc.I have a hunch the William Bonner who moved to KY was of a later generation than the William Bonner noted in the 1790 Pitt Co. Census and who moved to Granville Co.
I have found another reference to a Joseph Asbel(l) in the 1820 Bertie Co., NC census - page 52 - no township.I do not know as yet whether this is the same Joseph Asbel or even if related.Lots left to work out!
