Rev. Abner W. Asbill married Elisabeth Holstein and is buried in the Holstein cemetary on Padgett Pond road in Monetta, SC.He was a pastor at many Baptist churches around the Ridge including Phillipi, Bethel, Mt. Pleasant, and Pleasant Lane.According to ancestry.com he had the following children: Malachi B, Adaline, Caroline, Louisa, Lewis Griffin, George , Michael M. and John Willie. Please verify these names as John Willie is listed as J. William.J.W. is my direct ancestor and I am trying to track down if he was indeed John William or was John Willie.
The January 24, 1907 "Baptist Courier" has a brief history of Bethel Church, Monetta, SC that states the following:
The successor of Rev. Zedekiah Watkins who served the church until 1856 was Rev. Abner W. Asbill, a young man born and reared in the community. His education was that of the common schools of the country which vastly improved by hard study. Endowed with a large amount of common sense, and a great deal of tact in dealing with the various problems presented during his pastorate of eleven years, combined with his untiring zeal in the interests of the church and his faithfulness and earnestness as a preacher enabled him to win and hold the love and confidence of the church and the entire community. His death occurred quite suddenly in October 1867, and cast a deep gloom over the entire section.Today his memory is reverted to by the older members with tenderest love and veneration.
His pastorate was one of peace and tranquility as well as success in winning souls to the Christ. In 1862 mainly through his exertions the present building was erected. This large, handsome and commodious hous was then as now amoung the very best country churches in the State.Perhaps at the commencement of his lavors here the first Sunday school was organized with that peerless worker and devoted Christian, Col. R.B. Watson.
