JOHN ASBILL
John Asbill, son of Joseph Asbill and Dorthy Ross, was born in Perquiman or Chowan County, North Carolina about 1768. He married Elizabeth Coyle in Surry County, North Carolina on January 31.1788. Joseph Davis performed the ceremony. (Records in Surry County Court House,Dobson,N,C in a small box among many old records.) To this union was born five sons and four daughters, Thomas. John, Pierce, Tyre, William, Polly, Sarah, Hannah and Rhoda. Here again is and example of how the Asbills named their children after their parents, grandparents or reatives. John was named afer his father, Pierce was named after his great-grandfather, William after his uncle, Hannah after her great-great-grandmother Hannah Pierce, wife of Martin Asbill. Polly (Mary) was named after numerous aunts, ect. Thus given names were handed down and kept in the family.
In the U.S. Census of 1820 of Madison County, Kentucky John had one boy at home between 5 and 10 and one boy between 16 and 18, He had one girl between 16 and 18. Both he and Elizateth were listed as over 45. In July 1809 he was paid by Madison County $12.00 for four wolf scalps and sometime later in the same year he was paid shillings (note the two kinds of money used)for one wolf scalp. In November 1810 he received $150.00 for one wolf scalp. This record was entered at the same time his brother William's record was entered. That meant that they had been hunting together, which no doubt was often the case.
In Estell County, Kentucky records show that John lived on the road near Station Camp Creek and that he was appointed surveyer of this road in 1808. This must have been just a few years after he came from Surry County, North Carolina to Kentucky.
John owned land in both Madison and Estill Counties, We find a record in the Estill County Court House where he sold land to Linsfield Becknell (His son-in-law and to Abram Gum.
