North Carolina Asbys/Ousbys
I'm trying to follow up on some second hand info relating to John and Jane Ousby who emigrated to North Carolina from Hesket, Cumbria, UK, in the 1760s and bought a tobacco plantation near Salem. I'm told that the slaves took the name and overtime it has become Asby.
The informant was a black American by the name of Crystal Asby. This was sort of corroborated by a note I found on a genealogical website from a Jewel Asby who was looking for the origins of black Americans in the Halifax area of NC. Unfortunately I haven't been able to contact either of them.
Any comments?
