Like many who post here, I'm a descendant of Michael Ashford,b. ca. 1758, and Rachel Neville, of Prince William Co. VA and Charles Co. MD.
I am convinced that Michael is the son of another Michael, who appears in MD records too early to be the Michael who m. Rachel Neville. On June 13, 1670, a Michael Ashford witnessed a deed of Thomas Hussey and “Joan his wife.”It is certain that this was Michael Sr., as Michael Jr. would have been a boy of 12 at the time.
In addition, consider the following, from Charles Co. Court Proceedings 1671-1674;
In a cause depending between Jno Peirce Plaintiff and Thomas GIBSON Admr to Thomas COTTON Deft referrd untill the next Court;
Whereas there was an attachtht formerly granted to Jacob PETERSON agt the Estate of MICHAEL ASHFORD & layd in the hands of Tobias CRAYFORD: it is now ordred that Tobias Crayford give Securety for his appeareance the next Court to prove the paytht of that tob wch was due to Michaell Ashford for DEBORAH his wife, otherwise to pay to Jacob Peterson one thousand poundes of tob wth costs
The attachtht that was formerly granted to Henry ADAMS agt the Estate of Michaell Ashford for the Sume of nine thousand pounds of tob is now ailso continued: untill the next Court.
There is no mention of a child, but I think the deduction that this Michael (m. Deborah __) is the father of Michael (m. Rachel Neville) is pretty sound.
Now, for a couple of questions:
Does anyone know Deborah's maiden name?
Has anyone found any record of transportation for the elder Michael Ashford?He was in MD by 1670, and I have never found mention of him in any earlier record, so I'd suspect that he came over (presumably from England) in the 1660s.However, I've never found any record of it.Has anyone out there found any record supporting this?
