There may be some more speculation as one goes farther back in history.
Here are the notes that I have on James Astle.
Blackville Parrish New Brunswick in 1851 census.Settled in Doaktown NB.Came to Canada as a loyalist from New York.
James Astle came to Canada from Schenectady, NY.His is considered a Loyalist, although no proof of actual service for the British has been found. In 1784, when land lots were drawn in Paspebiac, Quebec, James and his wife, were on the list of applicants.Family was living in Restigouche on Chaleur Bay from 1789 to 1800.In 1809 James received a land grant in the Parish of Ludlow, Northumberland Co., New Brunswick.
Also see Return of Loyalists and Discharged Soldiers printed by S. E. Dawson pages 18-20.James possibly went to Canada on the brigs St. Peter, Liberty or Polly.
1. The following unattributed notation is on a genealogy chart I have of James Astles and Sarah Flowers' descendants. I think I have seen this other places and would appreciate the source:
"James Assels (1759-1823) arrived in New Carlisle, Que. on ship "Polly" in 1784 - said to be the son of James Assels Sr. - a Loyalist -arrived at New Carlisle, Que. in 1784 on ship "Snow Liberty" with wife and four children - sons ages 5 and 1 and daughters ages 11 and 8.

It looks as though James Astles b. c1755, may have been born in the then Province of New York. He came to New Carlisle of the Gaspe Coast of what was then Lower Canada in 1784, a Loyalist and married, in 1797, Sarah Flowers b. 1778 in the Colonies and died 27 May 1860 at New Carlisle d/o Robert Henry Flowers and Alice Pennington. James Astles and Sarah Flowrers are my 4th great grandparents. They had 11 children including Hugh Astles b. 1817 New Carlisle d. 16 Sep 1891 New Carlisle. Hugh married Helen MacAdams b. 1824 New Carlisle d/o William MacAdams and Ann McKenzie. Their son, Hugh Astles b. 15 Jul 1863 New Carlisle d. 27 Apr 1938 New Carlisle married Sarah Chatterton b. 15 Jul 1866 New Carlisle d. 7 Dec 1938 New Carlisle. You may e-mail me for further detail.
d. 1815. He was a Loyalist who may have been the son of Daniel Astle who served in the French and Indian War in the 1760's in NY. James and family removed to the Miramichi area of Northumberland Co., New Brunswick, Canada.
James astle married 1770 to Elizabeth McLean.Vounty of record is Schenectady.Spounce (Elizabeth) may have also been known as Elizabeth McClean.Marriage is recorded and / or took place at Schenectady Reformed Church, Schenectady, NY.
Source information: Kelly, Arthur "Marriage Records of Schenectady Reformed Chruch" 1988 which contains 2531 marriages from 1694 to 1852.Kinship publication code: 083This marriage is kinship item number / # 694 in the above kinship publication.
(An Elizabeth McLean married a James Richie in 1827 in Glenville Reformed Church in Glenville NY (Schenectady County)This is a possible relation.Fron Donald Keefer, "Vital records of Waestina and Glenville Reformed Church"

Here is what I have on Daniel Astle.
Quite a while back, I compiled a family history on the Astle family with all the various branches that I could find in the area early on. The elder James Astle on the 1784 list is my James, based on the makeup of his family. Angelica was born in 1774, Hannah about 1776, John in 1779 and Daniel, my line, about 1783. If your James was his son, then it was by a first, unknown marriage, which is certainly possible, since we've never been able to find out anything about him before his Nov 1770 marriage to Elizabeth McLane in Schenectady. I also have no proof of a year of birth and 1740 is only a wild, but reasonable guess.
I don't know if your James was a son, or a cousin or nephew. However, the name is unknown in colonial America except for one Ensign Daniel Astle with the Black Watch in the French and Indian War in the 1760's (based in Albany). The two lines liked many of the same given names, including Alfred, Daniel, James, Thomas, William and John for the males, along with Sarah,Jane and Angelique/Angelica for the females. There is also an Angelica born in Derby, England about 1770, as I remember from the IGI. There are tons of Astles there. However, the Black Watch was based out of Scotland.
Also on the refugee ship with James Sr. was Robert Flowers, likely the father of Sarah.
I'd love to find out more about these earliest people, but records don't seem to exist.

Served in the French and Indian War in the 1760s in NY per Linda Stufflebean.Possible father of James.
Linda Stufflebean has researched and published her results in the NB genealogy publication.
I have a gedcom file that I could email to you if I had your email address.Mine is [email protected].
Even in the 1901 NB census, the Astil name gets various spellings.
