Captain(Charles)Samuel Atchison who was married (May 1, 1848, probably in Illinois as they were living during the 1850 U.S. Census in Quincy Middle Ward, Adams, Illinois with one son, Samuel P., who was less than one)to Eliza Barbara Waldhaus (who was born in Germany) was not the nephew (as per family oral history)of the noted David Rice Atchison but a distant cousin. Also Pierce Atchison was not Captain Samuel Atchsion's uncle (as per family oral history) but was his older brother.
Captain Samuel Atchison was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on February 3, 1815. He was the son of Samuel M. Atchison and Nancy Lowery. They (Samuel and Nancy) had 11 children: Sarah, Elizabeth, Marcus L., Nancy, Solomon, Pierce, George W., John W., William, Charles Samuel and apparently Fielding who married Hannah Pancake on July 3, 1806 in Ross County, Ohio.
Six of the sons became Riverboat Captains on the Mississippi River (1830's to 1870's): (Charles) Samuel, Solomon, Marcus L., Solomon, George W. and John W. John W. was apparently killed in a Riverboat accident in 1850 in St. Louis, Missouri.
