Emma You need to contact Larry Athy. His email is firstname.lastname@example.org. He has the entire, detailed history of the Athey/Athee line back to the first Athee, Gerard, who was born in Athee Sur Cher (near the Cher river) in France to heir migration to Galway, Ireland and then to the US.
Though he was born a peasant, Gerard somehow became very well known Knight and became military leader for Richard the Lionhearted, King of England.. He was the Castilion of Chinone (sp) castle in France for King Richard.
When King Richard died and John became King, Gerard became his military leader also. His was the last castle to fall when King John was run out of France. When the castle finally fell Gerard of Athee and family were captured and he was then rescued by King John who put him in charge of the King's military, a capacity I beleive he served in until his death.
Gerard of Athee's son, Engelard of Cigogne, also became a great military leader. He is the only Castillion to ever defend Windsor Castle and he did it successfully sometime in the early-mid 1200's.
The Magna Carta, signed by King John in 1215 after his failed attempt to end an uprising by large number of Barons (and that's a VERY abbrivated history), has a direct reference to Gerard of Athee and his son (para. 50). that none of Gerrards relatives or descendants could ever hold office in England because Gerard de Athée's son, Engelard de Cigogné' was the King's military leader. It reads..
(50) We will remove completely from their offices the kinsmen of Gerard de Athée, and in future they shall hold no offices in England. The people in question are Engelard de Cigogné', Peter, Guy, and Andrew de Chanceaux, Guy de Cigogné, Geoffrey de Martigny and his brothers, Philip Marc and his brothers, with Geoffrey his nephew, and all their followers.
