If Alice Caves was born in 1868, How could she have married Jefferson Davis Atkerson in 1873?
That would have made her about 5 years old.
Not to be too critical but I am a descendant of her parents. I know how hard family lore is reconcile with real historical dates. Any info you have would be good even if it is word of mouth.
I also have a gg-grandfather from another family tree that was supposedly adopted by an Irish family when his Cherokee parents died on the "Trail of Tears". After doing the research I found he was really born in 1865 - 26 years after the "Trail". Oh well, the family folk-lore is not always right but it sure is fun.
Once my Grandpa Caves told me we were related to the great Will Rodgers through his great aunt. This story provided me many years of pride as a youngster.
My comments here are to encourage us all to record our oral history, and do also the research to verify, but don't dismiss your family's tradition. There may have been a reason or something that motivated it and that is the history of your family too. Thanks for reading.
