Why did they marry in Chatham??? Well, the groom usually married where the bride was- The history I have on this particular Family:
John Avent (Brother of my Thomas) Born 12 Jan 1734Northampton Co. NC died 1821-7 Chatham Co. NC married 1768 Mary Carey born a 1740 Northampton died 1821 Chatham.
Martha "Patsy"(Of Chatham Co. NC) born 1769 Dobbs Co. NC died 1851 Washington Co. Ga.
married 1786 Chatham Moses Cox Rev. Sol. Born 5 May 1756 Duplin Co. NC died 19 Dec 1845Washington Co. Ga. Buried Cox-Avent Cemetery, Oconee, Ga.
and here is your answer: Martha met Moses during the American Rev. when she carried water and made bandages for the troops in NC at age 10-11.She posed as a boy by the name of Patrick Avent until her Uncle Lt. Peter Avent spotted her at the troops bedside. He sent her home with a guard. She and Moses settled land in Wash. Co Ga. which was granted them in 1788 by grateful govt. for their services. Aventand Coxtown is named after them.
I only show one child- so would appreciate your additions there.
AND- William Avent & SarahMassie were John & Thomas parents- and Thomas Immigrant his Father wife Margaret Elizabeth Gooch. I have more on both. Please e-mail me as this is not my line.
