My husband is a descendant of Joseph Avant born in 1755 in Bovey Tracey - his descendants also lived in Dawlish, Devon.
We visited Dawlish in May, 2007 and found some history at the library that thhe ancestors fo Joesph Avant were believed to have arrived with William of Orange (later William III fo England). This would mean William sailed from the Netherlands to France and then to Torbay (near Dawlish). The Avant would have boarded the ship in France. Does anyone have any additional knowledge or info.
There appears to be additional Avants/Avents from Bixton and Bridport however I do not believe this to be the same line, but may be wrong.
