Rita Fontes Ayala, 80, a 78-year resident of Palm Springs, died Jan. 15, 2003, in Palm Desert.
She was born Sept. 26, 1922, to Francisco S. and Rosario Dominguez in Mesa, Ariz. She married Fred S. Ayala on July 26, 1942, in Palm Springs.
She was a homemaker for more than 60 years and worked for Francis Crocker, the man behind the development of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, and the Palm Springs Unified School District. She was a member of the Palm Springs Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband, Fred S. of Palm Springs; her daughter, Barbara A. Eves of Palm Springs; her son, Ronald of Palm Springs; her brother, Augustine D. Fontes of Palm Springs; and one granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Wiefels Mortuary Chapel in Palm Springs.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Palm Springs.Interment will be in Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City with Wiefels and Son Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements
