Thanks you, Sir Babbington, for your reply. There is a family 'story' about the Bavington family name coming from Babington in the US but I haven't been able to track it down.Apparently a war medal had a spelling mistake and the family just used that spelling after that.It was supposed to have happened during/just after the American Civil War and the family, for some reason, had to flee the US and came to Canada then.
But there are a few confusing things about that story.I have found referenced in christening records and such concerning Bavingtons before that time.....and my particular family immigrated enmasse to Canada from Kent sometime between 1871 and 1881.The family appears in the 1881 census for Toronto. There were Bavingtons in the 1881 census in England as well, some in Kent as well as elsewhere.
And the interchange of names seems to depend on who was doing the 'listening'.My great-grandfather was christened as George William Babington and the rest of the family under their Bavington name.....
But thanks again for your reply.I hope I get something more specific soon.
