The following entries for the 1850 Logan Co., VA census should provide some more clarity:
83 Ruth Starr 33 F - - VA John Starr 14 M VA Henry Starr 9 M VA Polly Starr 8 F VA Shelton Starr 4 M VA
522 James Starr 52 M Farmer $3,300 VA Rebecca Starr 34 F VA John Jude 17 M VA Joseph* Dempsey 10 M VA 14 Sep 1850
Previously I thought this Joseph Dempsey age 10 was a duplicate of Joseph Baisden age 15 living with the family of Joseph & Lucinda (Osborne) Baisden. I WAS WRONG. Instead, the following research supports that this Joseph Dempsey is a duplicate of Joseph Dempsey age 10, son of Andrew & Martha (Starr) Dempsey. However, I was correct when I said Joseph was living with his uncle James Starr because James Starr was the brother of Joseph’s mother Martha Starr, who married this Joseph’s father Andrew Starr. This conclusion is based on the following data:
1860 Logan Co., VA (WV) census
#709 Dempsey, Joseph A 20 VA Emanda 27 VA (sister) b. 1833 (d/o Andrew)
This Amanda b. 1833 was the daughter of Andrew; therefore, Amanda’s brother Joseph was also the son of Andrew.
A near neighbor was Joseph’s uncle James Starr who appears on the census as follows:
#708 Starr, James 60 VA Rebecca 43 VA
1870 Logan Co., VA (WV) census
#98 Dempsey, Andrew 62 (see census)
#100 Starr, James 60 (see census)
#101 Dempsey, Joseph 30 VA Rebecca (Deskins) VA 24

Ruth was the daughter of Conrad "Coonrad" and Elizabeth (Scantling/Scantland/Scanlon etc.) Starr who were both born about 1778.
According to family tradition this family was partially native American Indian, i.e., Cherokee.
Their children included:
James Starr b: Abt 1798 in Wythe (Tazewell Countyy,Virginia Polly Starr b: Abt 1805 in Virginia Samuel Starr b: Abt 1806 in Virginia Sarah Starr b: Abt 1808 in Virginia Martha Starr b: Abt 1812 in Virginia John Starr b: Abt 1816 in Ohio RUTH Starr b: Abt 1817 in Virginia
The name Conrad or "Coonrad" is such a distinctive name which I believe has a German origin; Consequently, it may be possible to find more research for this family in either Ohio or Pennsylvania. It is also possible due to the family's native American influence, the name Conrad may have been corrupted into "Coonrad" to gain greater acceptance by the local native American people.
Finally, does anyone know if the descendants of Joseph Baisden Dempsey b. 1835 continued the use of the name Conrad/Coonrad or even the name Ruth?
If anyone has any additional information on the family of Ruth Starr, it would be highly appreciated.
