Betty - we have a definite match here. One correction - Bart. His name was actually Anton Bernt or Bernt Anton - he went by both. This was my Grandfather.
A couple years ago I made contact with a Helen Brynteson in Rugby, N.D.She was wife to Raymond who was a son of Emma.We were only in contact once and I've tried to get back in touch with her through mail. You've reawakened my Bakken research mode which has been asleep lately.
I had Alice's parents as Angus & Caren (this was from census records, but Helen believed his name to be Augustine.
I did get immigrant info from the census, but have never located his records.I had a researcher look for an obituary or grave for Angus some time ago - nothing yet.
Angus (or Augustine) was born February 1842 in Norway, he immigrated in 1875.Caren was born September 1865 in Norway and immigrated in 1880.This is where it gets tricky for me.Caren and Angus were married in 1886, but my Grandfather was born in 1884.Not that children out-of-wedlock was unheard of or anything, but it does raise the question, was Angus really his Father or step-Father.I have no idea.
Children of Caren & Angus; from Emma on all born in Barton, N.D. 1 - Anton Bernt b. March 1, 1884; died Minneapolis, married Alma Karulina Lander in a double ceremony with Alma's sister Annie who married Tideman Ruud.I have wedding pictures and certificate.
2 - Emma b. May 1888 married Carl Brynteson.
3 - Clara b. July 1890
4 - Anna b. May 1893
5 - Alice b. April 1896
6 - Albert b. 1902 (helen says he never married)
7 - Esther - born 1907.
I found the family on the 1900 census in tact in Barton, North Dakota. On the 1910 census it shows Caren as head of household.I'm assuming, at this point in my research, that Angus died between 1906-1910, since Esther was born in 1907.After this I lose track completely.Did Caren remarry?or maybe join one of her daughters and their husbands?I don't know?
My Grandfather would be a good candidate for the "Black Sheep Society".I should nominate him.I'd be interested in any info on any of my Grandfather's siblings or his parents.
