A 51-year-old Ten Mile man was killed when he was struck by glass at the Gemtron plant in Sweetwater early Tuesday afternoon. "It's just a tragic accident," Sweetwater Police Chief Eddie Byrum said. SPD Public Information Officer Kenny Wilkins said the Sweetwater Fire Department was first on the scene.
Wilkins said firemen and co-workers did all they could to save the stricken man, James Bales. According to 911 Center dispatches, Bales had been struck in the neck. He died at the scene. Wilkins at one time worked at Gemtron. "It's a very close-knit family," he said. "There's a lot of good people there and our hearts go out to them and the family."
Chief Byrum praised the Fire Department and Gemtron workers at the scene who tried to save Bales. Wilkins said SPD Detective Bill Illingworth investigated the accident and there were no signs of foul play. Police said Bales was struck by glass as it was being transferred from a pallet to a hopper.
