Hi, I am also searching the Balk family from Germany, Do you have a
JOSEPH BALK....BORN 2/1860 IN NY
EVA PYER......BORN 2/1859 IN NY
CHILDREN---all born in New York City also.
KATHERINE.....3/1880
MATILDA.......10/1881
REGINA........9/1883
JOSEPH........7/1886
FREDERICK.....8/1/1892 DIED 4/22/1971 IN NJ
EVA...........1/1896
ANNA..........2/1898
These ages are from the 1900 USA census, living in Manhattan, FREDERICK is my grand-father, and named one of his sons JOHN. (see names below)
JOSEPH AND EVA'S parents were listed as born in GERMANY, but I don't know their names and don't know when they got here, allthough their is a HENRY BALK listed in the 1850 census as the only BALK in Manhattan at that time.
In the 1880 Census in Manhattan at the time I have the following
JOHN BALKE....96
JULIE BALKE...61
JOSEPH BALKE..24
HENRY BALKE16
JOHN AND JULIE list their PARENTS birth place as BADEN, with JOHN born in PRUSSIA and JULIE born in BADEN.
In the USA people always lied about their ages, so it is possible this is MY JOSEPH, and he lied in 1900 to continue working longer with all of the children still at home.
Also possible they americanized their name by dropping the "e".
Please let me know if their is any connection to your records, I have hit a block with records older that this.
Thank you so much,
Bonnie
