Christian Balke born Oct. 26, 1840 in Bluthen, Prussia. He and his mother set sail on a ship called the Weser from Bremen, Germany and landed at New Orleans, Llouisiana in 1858. They went to Galveston, TX then to Hempstead, TX. At 21 Christian joined the Confederate Army. He enlisted on March 24, 1862, at Bellville, TX into Company E, Infantry, Captain Robert Voigt, Commanding of Waul's Legion C.S.A. He fought at the Battle of Vicksburg and was captured on July 4, 1863. He was paroled on July 9, 1863. He then returned home. He married Mary Schenck on Aug. 7, 1866. They had seven children. Mary died on July 15, 1880. He remarried to Amanda Goebel on Aug. 10, 1881. They also had seven children. Christian died July 18, 1906. He's buried Milheim Cemetery, Austin, TX.
