The Bancroft line can be traced back but, beware of confusion of identities. According to some sources Jane's name was Bonython and they say born and buried at Northampton, Long Island, New-York in 1601. There are supposed to be court records on Jane Bancroft 1633 in Massachusetts. John Bancroft died1637Lynn, Massachusetts married Jane Bonython born 1601(?) some say Long Island, New-York and others England. Also some that, John Bancroft was Bishop of Oxford and uncle Richard Bancroft Archbishop of Canterbury? Bancrofts or Barcrofts of Derby, England may be correct. See 1902 New England Hist. Gen. Register, extracts of wills and papers supposedly proving that, our John and Jane Bancroft who came in ship "James" April 1632 and arriving after eight weeks, June 12th, 1632, were this family. John Bancroft dying 1637. See in Winthrop's Journal 12 Sep. 1633, Hubbard's History of New England p.156;Colonial Records of Massachusetts 3 Sep.1633;that, Lt. Thomas son of John and Jane Bancroft may have really been their nephew and, the son of John Bancroft's BROTHER Thomas Bancroft a minor poet in England;that, court records of Massachusetts Bay Colony fined John as John "Barcroft" for Jane's misbehaviour(!) on the passage over on the ship "James"? That, the town of Lyn(n), Massachusetts gave Jane fifty acres for her support after John died.Ralph Bonython born 1491 Curry, Cornwall, England m. Elizabeth Downe b.1495 Curry, parents of Richard Bonython b.1517 Curry m. Jane Durant and d.1542 Curry parents of John Bonython b.1543 posthumously Curry m. Eleanor dau. of Job Myllayton(Eleanor b.1535 at St.Kerrier, Eng. d.1628) and, John d.21June1562 Breage, CornwallTheir daughter was Jane Bonython who, m. John Bancroft in 1627?(not 1622?) THIS John Bancroft is recorded as having been b. about 1592;m.1627(?) to Jane Bonython;and, d.1637 which, WOULD be right, but, was that in Massachusetts or, England? This Bancroft line is: John Bancroft b.1520(1521?)Chellaston, Derbyshire, England m.1544 Margaret Hollingsworth(1522-1557) at Swarkston, Derby.,d.11May1557(same year as his wife?)Chellaston, Derbyshire; their son Ralph Bancroft b.1547Chellaston m.1569 Alice_ and d.1611 Swarkston; Thomas Bancroft b.1570 Swarkston m.1591 Rebecca Errington(b.1574 Swarkston;d. before 1639) and d.13Oct.1626; John b.abt.1592(1596?) m.1627(?)Jane Bonython d.1637. So perhaps Lt.Thos. Bancroft was a NEPHEW of John Bancroft rather than his son(b.1622?)for, he would have then been born 5 yrs. before(?) his parents' marriageso, perhaps he was the son of the minor poet George?or, Thomas Bancroft?Elizabeth Metcalf(1626-1711) is listed as having been b.20Sep.1626 Norwich, Norfolk, England;christened 20Sep.1626 Benedicts, Norwich, Norfolk;m.15Jul.1648Dedham, Norfolk, Mass.(!);d.11May1711Norwich, Norfolk, England? Surely this is in-correct! and buried 11May 1711b Reading, Middlesex, Mass.--swift travell between birth and christening;death and burial, indeed!Thomas Bancroft b.10Feb.1622London, Middlesex, England;m.15Jul1648 Dedham, Norfolk, Mass.;d.14Dec.1684 Springfield, Hampton, Mass. and buried at Wakefield in Essex, Mass. SAME DAY?William Bancroft circa 1500--John circa 1521(?)--Ralph circa 1547--Thomas 1570--John 1596?not1592?--Thomas 1622--Thomas 1649?John Bancroft b. about 1596 Eng. and d.1647 Lynn, Massachusetts descended from Thomas(3), Ralph(2) and John(1)m.Jane (Bonython?) of
