Sgt., also listed as YB Cassel.Enlisted 1861, age 30, mustered in as Sgt, promoted Ord Sgt Nove 1861, and transferred to field and staff.Wounded in shoulder at battle of Winchester May 1862, returned to duty 1863.Paroled at Appomattox Court House April 9, 1865.Note: Yerby changed from Barneycastle to B. Cassel during the Civil War, and his descendant used Cassel surname.
Ephrain Barneycastle (Francis3, Frederick2, Frederick1), Co K, see 1st Battalion where he transferred.Enlisted in Danville, VA, July 1861, age 21.Note he was wounded in same battle as brother above, also in shoulder.
Benjamin Castle (Davie family, John1), Co B.Went by Barneycastle and Castle in records.
James Barneycastle (Levi2, John1), Co E, enlisted Davie Co April 20, 1862, age 20.Wounded near Petersburg VA, June 1864.Returned to duty Spet 1864, paroled at Mocksville June 7, 1865.Pension paid in Grayson, VA, under Va pension act of 1900 (online VA source claims James fought in 42nd VA Inf, not true). Alves Barnycastle (?4, Peter3, Frederick2, Frederick1), Co K, Private.Enlisted March 1862, Davidson Co, age 18, as substitute, died in hands of enemy at Frederick, MD, Sept 1862.
Company raised in Rowan Co 1862.History much the same as 1st/9th Battalion.
Wesley Barneycasel (western NC Barneycastles), Co H, Private.Also listed under Barneycassel, Cassel, Cassell.Enlisted Cabarrus Co 1862, age 32, hospitalized Richmond VA March 1863 with pneumonia.Returned to duty May 1863, wounded in right arm at Gettysburg July 1863, right arm amputated.Captured in Maryland July 1863.Hospitalized at Chamberburg PA July 1863.Paroled at Baltimore Aug 1863.Exchanged at City Point VA, Aug 1863.Reported absent, wounded,until Nov 1864, when he was retired to the Invalid Corps.Survived the war (amazing).
Washington Barney (possible relation to Wesltey), Co H, Private.Index references him as a Barneycastle.Enlisted in Wake County March 1864, no age but young since enlisted so late.Sent to hospital May 1864.In hospital Richmond for 60 days, convalescent from chronic diarrhea and debility.Sick through Feb 1865, no further reports.
Company H, known as Hill Guards, was raised in Martin County in 1861-2, was known as Capt John R Lanier's Independent Company.In 1861-2 was known as 42nd Regt Co B, june 1862 became Capt Lanier's Company, Sept 1862 became 59th Regt, the a month later became 61st Regt.

John or James, Richard1?), Co H, Private, mustered in June 30, 1862.Wounded slightly in arm at Cold Harbor VA, June 1864, captured near Petersburg, VA.Confined at Pt Lookout, MD, June 23, 1864.Paroled at Pt Lookout Sept 1864.Exchanged at Varina, VA, Sept 22, 1864.Hospitalized at Richmond same day with scorbutus.Reported absent without leave on or about Dec. 31, 1864. Survived the war.
John H. Caslte (father poss John or James, Richard1?), Co H, Private, servied in 17th Regt 1862, transferred to the 61st March 1863. Paroled at Greensboro 1865.
Note: though the above are Castles, I believe them to be descendants of Richard, though I have no proof yet, only hunches through census data so far.Richard often went by Castle.
