Ok, I have been off geneaology for awhile now, thanks to loosing our office from Floyd's flood waters. And getting my art together for a show, and getting ready to go to Reno in Sept. for my prometheus muse of fire award for my poetry: Beat of the Drum. And working with the other Tuscarora bands in NC to form an alliance to go before the US Congress.
And I have just tried to catch up on the latest info posted. And am a bit taken aback at how many times my name is mentioned, funny my email address has stayed the same, and have a new computer: firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am suprised to see that instead of piecing the family together, some have taken extrodinary means to discredit my geneaology. Why?
Sorry if some can't stand the fact that we were listed as black and Indian and that seems to rattle a few die hards, but the truth sometimes hurts. But the truth will stand when the whole world falls.
It is sad when some have to be ashamed of the other side of themselves so much as to fabricate a history, and make the truth hide in the shadows. Your loss...
Now let me see where to begin.
First Maureen I apologize for not answering your questions as soon as you wanted, but I had much more pressing issues.
As most scholars know the "Indians" didn't keep written records, the white man did and wrote the world according to their own biasness. (The world according to Garf)It is ludicrious to think you will find many records of our people who were in the process of trying to survive the victors religous persecution.
Our oracles are our story, they have been handed down since way before the first white man ever layed foot on our land. They are not romantic nor false, we knew who we were and who our families were. You perpetuate the genocide by demanding written records that are non existant. The point is moot!
Of course we have their names, they baptized us in the name of their GOD and gave us a pinch of salt on the tongue, and their names, while taking our women for their pleasure, thus the bastardy bonds and apprenticeships someone put up here.
So yes we all have some European name or the other.
As early as 1524 the French Hugenots were in what was later called NC. And freely intermingled with the Native Americans here. And were far nicer to the Indians than theIrish, and British Dogs.
See Explorations and Attempted Settlements of Carolina, 1584-1590,at the State Dept. of Archives in Raleigh published 1957, on page 138 as a past brief, much skipped over bit of history there are discriptions of the French settlements of Giovanni Da Verrazano's exploration 1524, he was listed as the most Christian King of France, Francis the 1st. The French were escaping their own religious persecution from the roman Catholic rule so they went through Ireland, Scotland and England to get to the "New World".
So to answer a few questions on Barneycastle being Irish or English brought up. Neither, that was just a stop over to get to freedom because the Catholics thought ANY religion other than catholicism was savage, barbaric, and heathen.
Many of our Tuscarora Surnames and names of our villages are of French origin: and were here long before Great Britian claimed this land in the name of Britian's King Charles, not to be confused with France's King Charles.
ie Sans Souci in Tuscaroran was said to mean peaceful valley, In french it means peaceful or quiet town. Avoca in Tuscaroran means meeting of the waters, Avocat in French it means lawyers seat. Narhontes was a village archeaologist traced Barnwell's massacres through I have that picture on our Tribal website www.crosswinds.net/~sbtuscarora if you can't get there let me know, and I will personally send you a link... In France there is a River called Nantes. This place was originally called Carolingian also a French name, not Carolina. We also have 33 of our Surnames that are of French derivations.
So to answer one of your questions Maureen, being somewhere way back being partly of already persecuted French descent it would make sense that some of MY family be it French Heugunots/Indian mixture would fight the other French and their allies during the French Indian war, afterall the French Heugenots didn't try to annihilate us. They assimilated into us, therefore they were us.
There is a most excellent site on the French refugees records of baptisimals of 1721
As for your statement "one of the biggest mistakes that geneaologist make is believing oral family traditions, without finding fact, and being romantic stories.WRONG!
One of the worst mistakes a geneaoligist makes is assuming our people, I mean all of us, moved from place to place. it is a well known fact that the area around the people was constantly renamed, therefore to find people in Hertford Co. you have to go back to Bertie, because Hertford was cut out of Bertie in 1759.And to go back further you have to search Chowan, and further back early Virginia records.
This comes to my other answer.
Edmond and James Barns-castle (NOT BARNICASTLE) were found in what was referred to as Craven Co. NC in 1747, neither was given a land grant. William Hooten and Owen Slaughter both BEQUEATHED Edmond 50 acres of their own land and their freedom, upon their deaths. I also have those wills. They had 103 acres.
Then Craven decided Indians couldn't own land, and I just came across those records at the state archives in Raleigh, of how the land was taken from them, the same land now being listed as being on Roquist-Turtle Creek, and Cashie River that is in Bertie Co.
1769 Owen Slaughter also gave his son Alexander a negro girl named Sarah, now of course she could have the Barneycastle name, sound familiar. Sarah Barneycastle being listed as free head of a household in Bertie Co in 1790 with 9 slaves and was mysteriously never mentioned again in this region. Yet when some of the Tuscarora were removed to Quaker communities in Ohio, like the Dempsey's from Salmon creek, originally the Tuscarora village of Tandequemuc, also conecting to Sans Souci, in 1743, they find Sarah B. Dempsey.
And also have the same HERIDITARY DISEASE we have called CMT1A....
Now according to our DNA test to confirm this form of Muscular dystrophy, it came through both our combined Smith and Barneycastle lines. On my other side of my mother I am a Smith from Chief Samuel Smith's Levi line, my grandfather Newell T. Barneycastle was also struck down and for 13 weeks he was paralyzed from the neck down, with a strange form of MD. He recovered thank goodness. Also Chief Tom Blount who was named Chief from his mothers line (Who was Tuscarora) was also referred to as impotent of the limbs...CMT1A does that...
Now I also ran across a cohabitation records of Davie Co 1866 which list marriages of blacks and an index of females.
on page 4, Horas Gibbs was listed as being married to Elizabeth Barnacastle for 9 years found July 31, 1866.
keep in mind they were on the run after the disenfranchisement Act of 1835, there is a Smith/Davie township in Warren Co.
In Halifax was where they gathered a lot of us up and sent us to "normal schools" where the US government told them they were going to give them smallpox innoculations, instead they were given live cowpox serum, killing thousands.
Here I also found
1820 Bertie Co. census Frederick Barnacastle was listed pg 316. John Barnecastle was listed in Rowan pg 384. Samuel barnacastle m Mitilda Jones 7-19-1824
Martha Butler was known to be a "plantation Indian" had 2 children by Chief Cucha Macha aka John Cale, then he married Elizabeth Calais a french hugenot widow.
Her daughter Harriette Butler married James Barneycastle. Then 1843 Martha Butler a Tuscaroran woman left will leaving her brother Levin Butler in charge and I have her will where she left some property to her grandchildren the children of her daughter Harriette B. and son-in-law James Barneycastle.
Also most of the family knows how hard the civil war hit the family. Lt. Charles Barneycastle was a Buffaloe Soldier, yep you guessed it they fought for the Union, check out Gerald Thompson's Bertie Divided Alegiances, and Bertie Boys in Blue, Charles along with Cpt. Calvin Hoggard known as "yee Chieftain of yee Buffaloes", and Thompson and Johnson laid the first dept charges by rowing a canoe across the River at Plymouth at the Battle of batchelors bay in a gallant effort to sink the Confederate ship the Iron Maiden.
The first buffaloe soldiers got their names because they were Indians and knew the land like the backs of their hands. In the latter part of 1863-1864 the first black regiments came into play, but they were guards, and orderlies. When they caught the Buffaloe soldiers they hung them on the spot, they did not make it to Andersonville prison in GA. 26 were hung in Kinston alone in one day. They discribed them as having sallow skin, and stringy black hair, and dark eyes.
But alas I digress.

Now on to another Indian family Dr. John Sears who was also listed as being in the craven precinct, but is buried in Union, in Hertford Co. married Martha Barneycastle, the Sears are members of another Indian Tribe but Dr. Sears is listed as white, they also have CMT1A....
Now for George Washington Barneycastle, Bertie Co. married Angiline Mizell daughter of Aaron and Francis Mizell, she had 5 children before she died in 1843-44
1. Matilda M. Barneycastle 1835
2. William Ralph Barneycastle 1838 married Mary Margaret Phelp's 3-11-1868
3.Harriett Penelope Barneycastle married Thomas E. Bowen
4.Francis M. Barneycastle 1839 the same one apprenticed to Levi hardin, his wife was Francis cousin Mary Caroline Barneycastle.
Francis married William Bowen in 1857, he too was in the Union Army. Her second husband was George J. Harrell in 1865
5. Celia W. barneycastle 1840-1843
6. George Washington Barnacastle (later spelled Barneycastle)the 6 yr old apprenticed to James Wilson.
The only one remaining with his father when Angeline died in 1844 was William Ralph.
Second wife was Susan or Susannah Pierce, daughter of Elizabeth? and George Washington Pierce. They had 11 children
1. Kenneth b. 8-27-1846, d. 4-10-1931, m. Emily Baley 2-11-1867

8. Charles H. 1862 died young
9. Joseph Edward b. 1864, m. Annie Matthews
9-5-1887, then Odessa Smithwick 7-12-1941
10. Elizabeth J. b. 1867 ????
11. Isadora E. b. 1869 ????
George Washington Barneycastle died 1881, survived by his widow Susan B.
Now I am tired but one more thing. They took the names of their trades...Ridiculous! what about Jones, Smithwick-Iron candles???, Williams, Matthews, Liecester?, Phelp's, Ellis, Sears, Lewis, Outlaw (this could be fun),Owens, Thomas and I could go on, but I'm sure you get the idea.
Oh and in Ireland Barney means baby, do they have a baby castle?
Oh and to whoever made the comment about the village of Innieuts when Barnwell was angry because all he got was one little Indian girl, he_l no I didn't say the Innuets in freaking Alaska. We had a village called that and i have the map from Dr. David Sutton Phelp's ECU Archeaology Dept. I can scan it on our site for you and I sure will find the book that came from, I think it was in F. Roy Johnson's Tuscaroras Bk 2. Don't be stupid.
As for the joining of two names, the Cherokee who are also Iroquoian place the maiden name first then nee, or ny and join the married name on the end, like my name is now with Mejorado-Livingston. And the Barney's were sent to Waters and Hampton and Carlisle Normal Training schools to be normalized..... Made white, or at least act it.
I do hope I have given you all enough to absorb for awhile. In the future you can talk to ME, not about or around me...
Nyeahweh (Thank You)
Marilyn aka Tonto mother dog :)Yep I have a looongg memory...
