I posted a similar note on ancestry.com and received no replies, so please forgive the cross-posting.
I have in my possession an original marriage certificate for George Barnhart. I am trying to figure out whether I am related to these people; the document was passed down to me.
The handwritten document has been folded, and on the outside says "Certificate of Marriage, George Barnhart to Goodcastle" or maybe it's Goodcatle -- it's hard to read. The inside says, "This is to certify that on the fifth day of October AD Eighteen hundred and twenty, before me Samuel Swaney [??spelling??] Esquire one of the Justices of the peace in and for this county of Franklin, George Barnhart of the township of Lurgan in the said County labourer, and Hannah Goodcastle [Goodcaste?] of the township of Southampton in the County aforesaid single woman were legally joined in marriage each of them being of full age and declaring them-selves free from prior engagements, or lawful impediments. In Witness wherof as well they, the said George Barnhart and Hannah Goodcasle [??], as I the said Justice, and other the witnesses present have hereunto subscribed our names the day and year aforesaid -- "
Then there are some names that appear to have been written in pencil, and they are badly faded and almost illegible. Is anyone here familiar with George and Hannah?
Now, many people in my family come from Logan County, Ohio, and in the 1870 U.S. census, there is a George Barnhart listed in the household of John & Elizabeth Snyder, Pleasant twp, Logan Co., Ohio. I suspect this couple could be the parents of my g-g-gmother, Ellen Snyder. The census also lists a girl who would be the same age that Ellen Snyder was at the time, but the name listed on the census is Sarah.
Here is a further clue: In the same file that was passed down to me, there was a very fragile letter and envelope addressed to Mr. George Barnhart, "Logan's Ville, Logans County, Ohio." The letter is written by George's granddaughter Maggie M. Black on Nov. 2, 1861.
Please let me know if you think you may be related to these people and if you have any further information.I would be happy to email you a scan of these documents.
