Hi Stan,
Thanks for the input but still maintain that Dr. Joseph Barnard, in his journal entry for 4 Feb 1836, named Mr. Short as one of the men who came down the Mississippi River on the steamer Junius with him.
Guess reading is subjective but what Dr. Barnard wrote in his journal will state exactly here."I found in the company (Red Rovers) three men who had come down the Mississippi on the same boat (Junius) with me and upon their invitation joined their mess.""One of them, Mr. Short was the head of the mess, etc...
Dr. Barnard does not make mention of Zachariah Short being on the Schooner Aurora with him, although he was, but to my thinking talking about three men traveling down the Mississippi River on the Junius with him, then in the next sentence stating one of them was Mr. Short sounded to me like he was naming one of the men but perhaps I am wrong?
Changing subjects here but there are a number of Carter family researchers who name Nancy Ann Dortch's parents as having been William Dortch and Mary (Maria) Hay, not Elizabeth Carroll?Believe did see some Carrolls in the Natchez Court Records so need to look at them more closely.
Too, did not know that William Barnhill, Jr.'s middle intital was P. either so thank you for that new information and agree with you that John N. Barnhill was not a child of William Jr. and Cynthia Hodge Barnhill.
Right now deep into a new CD, The Deep South 1700s-1800s, records for the District of Natchez, Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi.Has many listing for the Natchez Court Records 1767-1805 and 1781-1798 but there is only one entry for John Barnhill, a witness to a Will 2 Feb 1797, Book G, pg. 345.
The history of the Mississippi Territory, Natchez District, Creek uprising, Fort Mims and the War of 1812 has certainly caught my interest so Texas with have to wait for a while.Would like to get my hands on those Natchez Court Records and wonder if they are stored in Jackson, Mississippi?
Looks like from the CD that even marriage records went through the court system as well as land transfers and civil suits.Bet since there is a listing for John Barnhill and several for David Dortch and Parsons Carter that could find a wealth of information on any other Barnhills found in the Natchez District in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
Thanks again Stan,
Cathy
