Wish to confirm the ancestry of Joshua Barnum Sr, born about 1782, probably CT and Judah Barnum, born about 1792, Saratoga Co, NY.In 1816 and 1818 they purchased land in the area that became Newstead, Erie NY from the Holland Land Company. Joshua and Judah may have been brothers, but their relationship is not confirmed. They appear on Niagara and Erie county census records from 1820 – 1860.
In our search for their ancestry, Aaron Barnum (c1756 Danbury CT) has emerged as a likely candidate for their father. He appeared on the 1790 census of Ballston, Albany NY, where Judah was born in 1792. By 1800 he was living in Pittsfield, Otsego NY. He may be the A. Barnham living in Milford, Otsego NY in 1810. In each census year, males are present of the correct age groupings for Joshua and Judah.
In 1810, a J. Barnum appeared on the census of New Lisbon, Otsego NY. New Lisbon was formed from Pittsfield between 1800 and 1810. J. Barnum was living among many of the same families neighboring Aaron Barnum in 1800. This J. Barnum is believed to be Joshua Barnum. Family makeup is consistent with Joshua’s family. In addition, the A. Barnham of Milford in 1810 had a male living in his household of the correct age grouping for Judah Barnum, b 1792.
Newstead neighbors of Joshua and/or Judah also included several of the same family groups who lived near Aaron and J. Barnum in Otsego Co, NY.
Aaron Barnum is said to be the son of Judah Barnum of Danbury, CT and his wife Lydia. He had a brother Judah who remained in Danbury. Following is the proposed line of descent from Judah Barnum 1720 Danbury, Fairfield CT:
