Hi Philip, Thomas Barrell was listed on his marriage certificate as 34 years. The marriage took place in 1854.Assuming that the correct age was listed on the certificate (I appreciate that it may not be), he must have been born in 1819/20.
The wedding took place at the Register Office in Colchester and the certificate lists Isaac as Thomas's father but notes him as deceased.Thomas was listed as living at the Waggon and Horses Inn, North Hill, Colchester.Phoebe was listed as living at Water Lane, North Hill, Colchester.Thomas is listed as "Private in 20' Regiment of Foot".
Phoebe married again almost exactly 2 years later (Nov 1856) and emigrated to South Africa with her German husband. But, in 1861 Phoebe is back in England living with her mother and listed as married. She still has her German surname but from what I know of the history of the British German Legion it is very unlikely that her husband also returned.10 years later she is listed as a widow but with the surname Barrell. Her children's marriage certificates do not help as they list their father as Charles Barrell who as far as we know, did not exist. I know they were both born in South Africa and that they were using their German name in 1861.
I have Phoebe on all censuses up to 1891, I have the certificate for her 3rd marriage and finally her death certificate.
Thanks very much.I look forward to hearing from you. Kathryn
