Cathy, I don't think your Charles is in our direct line.We do have a Charles Thomas Barto who moved to California and who had two wives by other names. Our family appears to have come from Montgomery County, PA, and migrated to Beaver County around 1835.There is another line of Bartos in Cranberry Township who appear to have come to that area in the early 1800s from Berks County. There are at least two relatively well documented lines of Bartos, one originating from John who settled in Berks County around 1740.You can get more information from the Barto website on the Internet. There is an extensive posting on John, son of John Barto. Another line, the Bartow family that came from New York (?) to New Jersey and PA.The Bartows were important merchants in Philadelphia and also had other distinguished family members.Their line is in a book that can be found in Ancestry.com's Local and Family Histories. When looking for Bartos, always look for Berto, Bartow, Bardo, Batto, etc., because the name is frequently misspelled.
Hope this helps you get around the dead end.
