Jamie:
I have spoken with my cousin Janie Thompson from Temple,Texas and San Antonio since my original note from you and would like you to get in touch with George and Rita Thompson in Temple. They are in the phone book and information. I know that you have a brother who is a judge somewhere in Texas and that we are cousins. I would like to be in touch by e-mail.
According to LDS, Benjamin Bassel's father was John Bessel and was also born in Litchfield CT. I can't get behind that. I briefly corresponded with a Mr. Bessel who runs the Masonic libraries. He told me that the Bessels, to the best of his knowledge, are Jewish. He had that same legend about the double "l" at the end of the name that got dropped. Some did and some didn't. Go to your computer white pages and check it out. There are plent of Bassells as well as plenty of Bassels as well as plenty of Bessels.
You are better positioned to find out who John Bessel's father was and maybe how the family got to America. I have heard it was France by way of Amsterdam.
I know the genealogy from CT to WV to TX and have made touch with people from other branches of the family. Some of them are still in West Virginia. Some are still in CT and some are still in NY.
Check the Chatatauqua County NY bulletin board. You will find a story about a Tyrus Goodwin Jr who married Anna Bassel born 17-6-1790, daughter of of David and Eunice (POND) Bassel of Litchfield.
I don't know which branch of the Bassells you come from but because of your connection with Bell County Texas, it may be Byron Bassel and Susan Stout, in which case I can fill you in.
Let me hear from you. Suzanne
