SAMUEL N. BASSETT, son of Daniel C. and Abigail Bassett, was born in Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY, Jan. 18th, 1829. In 1851 he came to Warsaw, Wyoming Co., NY with Lauman and Rockafellow & Moor, contractors on the Buffalo & New York City Railroad, and assisted in building that road from Attica, NY to Hornellsville, NY. He was with this company with the first train went over the road, Aug. 25th, 1852. In Jan., 1857, he went to Illinois, where he had charge of the track of the Illinois Central Railroad from Warren to Dunleith. In 1863 he again had charge of the track of the Erie Railroad; in 1873 he became road master of the New York & Oswego Midland Railroad, and held the position till the spring of 1879. Since then he has been engaged in building a railroad out of Chicago, IL. Mr. Bassett was married Aug. 25th, 1853, to MELISSA J. GAY, daughter of Daniel and Betsey Gay, of Warsaw, NY. They have three children. Mr. Bassett has always been a working member of the Democratic party. Mrs. Bassett and her daughter are members of the Presbyterian church.
