There is no definitive answer. Dugdale (in Baronage of England, under Basset of Hedendon)says Gilbert "as I guess was a younger son to Ralph Basset, justice of England".
However Reedy in Basset Charters (1995, Table 1)and Salter in The Boarstall Cartulary (1930, p. 324) have him as likely a brother of Ralph Basset.
Rosie Bevan gives some further details at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/gen-medieval/2003-06/1054780248http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/gen-medieval/2003-06/1054780248 , but she has Gilbert dying in 1166. This seems unlikely (but not impossible) if he was a Domesday tenant of Robert d'Oilly in 1186 (Keats-Rohan, Domesday People, 1999).
Take your pick. I have not seen the other names mentioned as having married Edith.
