I was clearly in error when I stated that BFOOV has made a "positive ID, as a direct ancestor of the Gilbert line, one John Bates born in Hempstead, LI,NY, in 1664".
Perhaps what I should have said was that the genetic dist was "0" (of course only based on 12 markers), and thus these 2 share a common ancestor.
However, since I have you on line...I have a couple of questions.
I appear to be having a difficult time getting info on the John Bates born 1664 in Hempstead LI. That there were Bates folks in the area is no question (I saw a James Bates in Huntington, LI; and a John Bates in Stamford Conn). But there was mention of a John Bate (no s) who filed suit in 1670 over rights to some 15 acres of land in Hempstead (Bate vs Curtis). What info/sources do you have for this John Bate(s) born 1664, and how can I get a line on him?
Also, I wonder if you could offer some comments/ideas on how/why the haplotype for the Gilbert/John line is E1b1b1 and seems vastly outnumbered by the rest of the Bates in the project (who are not E1b1b1)?
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my initial posting.
