Hi John Battley,
Yes, I am still on the hunt for Battley family links.
I do know of the entry in Burkes Landed Gentry of Ireland; it has both helped and hindered in that there is no evidence of how and where a William Battley came to be in Ireland, except the claim that Nicholas the Apothecary returned to Bury St Edmunds because he had lands there - and he had a lot of them by the time he died!
Walter de Battaille is the reputed sire of the whole family of Batley, Battley, Battelle and other derivations.
You can find a host of information in the book "A History of the Battelle Family in England" by Lucy Catherine Battelle of Rotherham, England. 100 copies were published in 1985 by the Battelle Press of Columbus, Ohio.
Where in the world are you? We found one copy of the book in New Zealand and two in Australia. An Australian researcher now has it on disk as well. It tells the genealogical story of the two sons mentioned in the Domesday Book and all their descendants to almost 1800 - tho' there will be some missing - some of mine were in fact. LCB as I name her did an amazing job in the pre-computerworld.
I would like to know where you are and what branch of the family you come from. We are still a small clan, it seems and every link leads to more information.
I did get to Bury St Edmunds and get a lot of research done there, also at Westminster Abbey Archives (Muniments).
Yours sincerely,
Don Battley, Auckland, New Zealand.
